Classes and Workshops
Classes and workshops are a great way to improve your photography skills. On offer are a few introductory workshops intended to get you started with a new camera. Many of these techniques are applicable to photography with a cell phone camera. However, the material is intended for digital inter-changeable lens (SLR or mirror-less) cameras.
Taking photos is a very tactile, hands-on experience. I feel that the best learning is accomplished in the same way. With that in mind, all of the workshops on offer have the majority of the time dedicated to hands-on experience. Each workshop's outline begins with a short presentation (20-30min) followed by taking photos as a group (60-90min). During the presentation, I encourage students to ask questions and get involved. Once we begin taking photos, I will be with you taking my own photos as a demonstration as well as looking over your shoulder providing guidance. This is not like at school where you do some homework and then a week later you receive the feedback. My goal is to provide constructive feedback and guidance immediately. Read more about each workshop and register below.
Introduction to Photography - Intro 1
Getting To Know Your Camera
Course Overview
Modern digital cameras are very sophisticated. It can be overwhelming when trying to learn how to use them. In this workshop, I will cover the different parts of the camera. Following a short presentation, I will be with you taking photos while explaining my thought process. Then it will be your turn. While you operate your camera, I will look over your shoulder and provide guidance and constructive feedback.
After the workshop is complete, you should be able to answer the following questions:
-
What is an exposure?
-
What is shutter speed (or exposure time) and how does it affect a photo?
-
What is aperture (or f-stop) and how does it affect a photo?
-
What is sensitivity (or ISO) and how does it affect a photo?
-
What is focal length and how does it affect a photo?
-
What is a light-meter and how do we use it?
-
What dials, buttons, and other controls are on your camera? How do we manipulate them?
-
How do we put all of these concepts together to take a photo?
Location
The workshop takes place entirely outdoors. Dress according to the weather and be prepared to be outside for the approximately 2hrs. We will meet at Woodbridge Farms near the playground. There are plenty of free parking spaces on the road. Note, there are no public washrooms around the pond.
Schedule
I will give a presentation approximately 30min in length. I will make the slides available in pdf form after the session. Hard copies are also available for an additional fee.
Following the presentation, we will put these ideas into action. We will take photos together for 60-90min.

Introduction to Photography - Intro 2
Design Concepts and Photography Terminology
Course Overview
This course is similar to the first one (Intro 1). It is suggested to take them in sequence. However, it is not required. The course structure follows the same pattern. I will begin with a short presentation. Then it will be your turn. While you operate your camera, I will look over your shoulder and provide guidance and constructive feedback. Occasionally, I will demonstrate a particular technique and commentate what I am doing and why while taking a photo.
After the workshop is complete, you should be able to answer the following questions:
-
What are some of the visual design concepts?
-
What are some of the parts of the camera?
-
What are the elements of an exposure?
-
How do we put all of these concepts together to take a photo?
